Christmas officially comes to Chamonix during the weekend of 5th-7th December. Visitors and locals alike will see the town transformed into a Christmas wonderland getting everyone into the festive spirit.

The town will turn on their Christmas decorations and from 5:15pm on the Friday right through to the Sunday afternoon children will be able to pay Santa a visit in Santa’s mailbox, enjoy the children’s parade and tombola and take part in the children’s ice hockey competition.

From the 11th to the 13th July, Chamonix becomes the mecca for climbers worldwide during the Chamonix Mont Blanc’s International Climbing Festival. The three day event brings together Frances best climbers as they compete in a number of qualifiers over the event for the world cup speed climbing and world cup difficulty climbing titles.

As the weekend closes on the Pass Portes du soleil 2009 and the last mountain biker leaves resort, the only thing to keep the spirits up is to start planning next years trip to the Pass Portes du Soleil 2010.

Now as the dust hasn’t even settled yet on this years event, information for next years has not been released, however, as soon as it does Independent Mountain will be posting all information up on our blog.

Last chance for the riders to score some points before the final of the Cup in Bellwald.
It will be also the opportunity to discover once again this pist and try to beat the time of the best riders of the European Cup.
More than 250 riders are expected.
During this period of holidays, the public will also be present to support the best swiss riders.

much fun you have along the way! When I was first introduced to hiking by my well heeled partner I imagined a hike was going to be a gentle walk through the meadows, taking in the breathtaking views, pretty mountain flowers and if I was really lucky a bit of Marmotte spotting!

Climbing a mountain pass! Many a cycling enthusiast, following in the path of Tour de France “pros”, has attempted to climb these legendary passes! The latest to join the list of twenty or so “notable hill climbs” is Les Carroz’s Pierre Carrée pass! From the beginning of July, the “Balme - Les Carroz - Col de Pierre Carrée” climb will be lined with GSM beacons and kilometre markers to indicate the average gradient, maximum percentage incline and distance. Microchips will be available from the Tourist Office for cyclists to record and calculate their time for this hill climb.
